Reconstructive Urology
Restoring Function for Men and Women through Surgical Repair and Prosthetic Technologies
When you live with urinary dysfunction, it's hard to feel in control. This can have lasting effects physically, emotionally and socially.
Some problems can be corrected with medications or physical therapy. Others require additional intervention.
SLUCare Physician Group's reconstructive urologist specializes in complex urinary problems that require repair along the urinary tract. Our specialist is one of the only reconstructive urologists in the St. Louis region, treating patients with urological conditions stemming from structural problems.
Reconstructive Urology Treats:
- Severe stress incontinence
- Urge incontinence
- Overactive bladder
- Neurogenic bladder
- Genitourinary trauma
- Urethral stricture
- Pelvic prolapse
- Side effects of prostatectomy
- Erectile dysfunction
- Peyronie's disease
Areas of Specialty
Urethral reconstruction — The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. (And semen in men.) The urethra can sometimes become damaged or narrowed, causing problems with urination. We offer expertise in the repair of an injured or scarred urethra through endoscopy or open surgery. In collaboration with other SLUCare specialists, he also performs tissue grafts, replacing damaged urethral tissue with healthy tissue from other areas of the body.
Prosthetics — When other treatments are no longer effective, prosthetic devices can be used to control urinary incontinence or to help men struggling with erectile dysfunction. Our SLUCare reconstructive urologist performs procedures to implant, maintain or replace prosthetic devices, including:
- Artificial sphincter for urinary control, often following prostate surgery
- Male slings to control moderate levels of urinary incontinence
- Penile implants for erectile dysfunction
Endoscopic procedures — For patients suffering from overactive bladder, we offer Botox injections to relax the bladder and reduce the number of trips to the restroom. We also offers a procedure that bulks up the urethra through the use of injected material — an option for patients with minor incontinence or patients with complicated medical conditions.
