Uterine Fibroid Embolization

A Non-Surgical, Minimally Invasive Alternative to Treating Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive image-guided procedure, a safe and effective fibroid treatment option that may be used as an alternative to hysterectomy. UFE shrinks the fibroids, relieving symptoms without surgery or side effects and preserving your uterus. It is performed by a vascular interventional radiologist — a board-certified physician who is trained to perform minimally invasive procedures.

How Does UFE Work?

UFE begins with a tiny incision in the wrist or groin that provides the physician access to arteries that feed the fibroids. Using specialized X-ray equipment, the physician passes a catheter (small tube) into the uterine artery, and guides it near the location of the fibroid. Small spheres are injected through the catheter and into the blood vessels feeding the fibroid, depriving the fibroid of oxygenated blood, thus shrinking the fibroid.

Once treated, the microscopic tools are removed and a Band-Aid® is applied. The entire UFE treatment typically lasts less than one hour. Patients return home the same day. After a couple of days' rest, patients can return to work and normal activities.

Why Choose SLUCare for UFE?

  • We are minimally invasive image-guided specialists. Our fellowship-trained doctors offer expertise in women's health and uterine fibroids.
  • Our wrist-based approach gets you back on your feet faster. SLUCare Physician Group specialists are among a handful of providers in the country to offer UFE through an artery in the wrist rather than the groin. This enhances patient comfort, shortens recovery time and reduces complications.
  • Pain management is our priority. Pain is the most commonly reported side effect following UFE. SLUCare specialists have discovered a unique method for managing post-procedure pain. By numbing the nerve close to the uterus, we are able to offer procedures that are virtually painless.
