SLUCare otologists and neurotologists treat adults and children with hearing and balance
disorders. Our specialties include cochlear, Baha, and other implants used to treat
hearing loss; treatment of acoustic neuromas using surgical and radiotherapy techniques;
surgery for otosclerosis and chronic ear disease/cholesteatoma; and the treatment
of complex balance problems.
Our team is led by Anthony Mikulec, MD, who received residency training at Stanford University and fellowship training in ear and skull base surgery at Harvard University. Dr. Mikulec is board-certified in both otolaryngology and in neurotology, and is a member of the Skull Base Surgery Center, specializing in the care of skull base tumors such as acoustic neuromas.
Treatment options for those conditions include watchful waiting with serial MRI scans, surgical removal of the tumor, or stereotactic radiotherapy with the CyberKnife, which allows for ambulatory fractionated (spread out over several days) treatment of these benign tumors without the use of a head frame. Patients can walk in and out of their treatment session and often go back to work the same day.
