Cochlear & BAHA Implant Program
Cochlear implants are surgically placed electronic devices that restore a sense of sound for people who are severely or profoundly hard of hearing. The SLUCare Cochlear Implant Program can assess the eligibility of a patient to receive a cochlear implant, and provide information and counseling.
Other types of hearing loss can be treated with a bone anchored hearing aid, also known as a BAHA or an osseointegrated implant. This is a surgically implantable system for the treatment of hearing loss. It stimulates the cochlea through bone conduction. The device has been used since 1977 and was cleared by the FDA in 1996 as a treatment of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. BAHA is an appropriate hearing solution for patients with chronic ear infections, external auditory canal atresia and single-sided deafness who cannot benefit from conventional hearing aids.
Following implantation of a cochlear device, we provide necessary speech mapping and hearing rehabilitation services.
The SLUCare Cochlear Implant Program consists of a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, audiologists, speech pathologists and social workers experienced in the evaluation and rehabilitation of adult and pediatric cochlear implant users. Implants are performed at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital and Mercy St. Louis.
