Audiology: Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose SLUCare Audiology?

SLUCare audiologists are trained professionals who have completed clinical fellowships and are certified by the American Speech-Language & Hearing Association. We provide total hearing and balance care, including hearing tests, hearing aid fittings, balance assessment and treatment.

SLUCare audiologists are not retailers. Our practice is not dependent on hearing aid sales, so you can rest assured you will not be pressured into a hearing aid purchase. When you are ready to take that step, we will explain to you the various options and can make a recommendation based on your level of hearing loss, your physical attributes and your lifestyle.

What are the options for treating hearing loss through SLUCare?

Hearing aids: We offer all major brands and can provide an independent assessment of their benefits.

Cochlear implant: For patients with severe hearing loss, we offer this surgical option.

Osseointegrated implants and prosthetics: These devices enable hearing for people with unilateral hearing loss, chronically draining ear infections or conditions that prohibit wearing a hearing aid.

I'm not sure I'm ready for hearing aids. Why should I see an audiologist?
Just as you would have your eyes checked every year, we recommend having your hearing checked yearly. Doing so allows us to chart your hearing over time and to respond quickly if there are sudden changes that may indicate a deeper problem. When you decide that your hearing loss is affecting your quality of life, we can look at your medical history together and decide how best to move forward to improve your hearing.
Do I need a referral to see a SLUCare audiologist?
No. But if your insurance plan covers hearing exams, you should check to be sure SLUCare is covered.
Does insurance cover hearing aids?

Frequently, hearing aids are not covered by insurance or are only partially covered. Check with your carrier to confirm your coverage.

If you select a hearing aid through SLUCare, all subsequent visits to fit or adjust your hearing aid are covered at no additional charge.
