Ceremony Marks New Phase of SLU Hospital Construction

August 16, 2018 — SLUCare Physician Group and SSM Health marked a milestone in the construction of the new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital: placement of the final 31-foot beam in the steel framework of the building. The occasion was marked by a topping out ceremony, featuring brief remarks from leaders of both organizations and a blessing by SLU's own Fr. Christopher Collins.

SLUCare and SSM Health employees signed the beam prior to the event, leaving a personal, permanent mark on the new structure. Crowds gathered to watch, in person and via live stream, as crews hoisted the beam decked with flags from both organizations, an American flag, and an evergreen tree, symbolizing the completion of the structure as it reached its final height.

Doctors, staff and students at Saint Louis University and SLUCare Physician Group are delighted to mark this step in the construction of our new hospital. Together with SSM Health St. Louis, we look forward to caring for patients, training doctors and researching novel treatments in our new facility.”

Robert Heaney, SLUCare Physician Group CEO

The hospital, slated to open in September 2020, will feature 800,000 square feet of space, 316 private patient rooms, an expanded Level I trauma center and emergency department, larger intensive care units, expanded patient parking, green space and areas for future campus expansion.

It will be located on 15 acres adjacent to the current facility off Grand Boulevard between Rutger and Lasalle streets. Alberici Constructors Inc. is the project’s construction manager.
