Phototherapy

Phototherapy is used to treat a variety of skin diseases and conditions, most commonly psoriasis. SLUCare dermatologists offer both UVB and PUVA as treatment options.

  • UVB
This treatment involves exposing the skin to a specific wavelength of ultraviolet uvb raylight that is therapeutic for psoriasis. Phototherapy light boxes produce UVB artificially to suppress psoriasis.
  • PUVA
In this treatment, psoralen, a plant extract, is combined with exposure to ultraviolet light to treat psoriasis on the whole body or on isolated sites such as the hands and feet. PUVA clears psoriasis for more than 85 percent of patients who use it, and results in long remission times, even without maintenance therapy.
